Divisional Tournament 2018

It was a long two days. The divisional tournament is always a trying, testing ordeal where every match matters and our players sometimes have to play 3 matches in a day. In singles and doubles, playing 2 in one day is quite the feat… 3 is something else. I was extremely proud of our players sticking it out and performing their best in these conditions. I want to also mention that the camaraderie, support and cheering was second-to-none at the tournament, with piles of teammates at each match cheering their hearts out. Belgrade was far and away won the cheering award – let’s keep bringing cheering back to tennis!

We are thrilled to be have five players from Belgrade, along with such strong Divisional entries, into the state tournament this year. All of our team worked so hard playing and supporting each other this year. Especially as a first-year head coach, I’m very proud of the work we have done.

Seniors Lilly Reddick and Brooke Gilbertson have come so far from their start with the program. Their work ethic has been a benchmark for the entire team, and their second-place finish against an equally sharp Park #1 was extremely fun to watch. It’s amazing to see two teams raise each other’s game to new levels, especially right before the state tournament.

Conner McCauley and Javan Chisholm are another senior doubles pair who have worked tirelessly in and out of season to get to state. I had mentioned that we tried to get Conner to play doubles at the beginning of the season without success, and it was amazing to see him pick it up later with his good friend Javan and perform at such a high level.

Hanna Stokke had to beat her good friend and co-number-one singles player Eliza McLaughlin to go to state, and that match yesterday was particularly emotional for all of us. Both girls have pushed each other all season and without the other, neither would have been in a position to go to state, I don’t think.

I would also mention McLaughlin played a very tight match against Fergus’ Tessa Gatz, and in a crucial point, Gatz allowed the replay of a point after McLaughlin slipped on an errant ball. Gatz ultimately lost that set and the match, but did not look back with an amazing show of sportsmanship and maturity. They both played some of the best tennis we’ve seen them play this year in that match, and both displayed levels of sportsmanship and maturity many adult players would love to achieve.
